Good Luck and let me know if we can help with anything else. All the best, Courtnie

Type I is insulin dependent. In other words, the pancreas cannot produce any insulin at all. People who have type I must test multiple times daily and must inject insulin several times a day or wear an insulin pump just to stay alive - thus they are insulin dependent. Type I is also referred to as IDDM. Type I might happen after exposure to a certain virus, hereditary reasons, etc. It is very unlikely to get type I after age 35.

Type 2 is NON insulin dependent. The person with type 2 has a pancreas that is still functioning but for some reason either it is not putting out enough insulin to keep the body regulated or the body is blocking the production of insulin making its absorption inefficient, therefore causing high blood sugars. Type 2 might happen due to being overweight, certain hereditary markers, etc. You cannot catch diabetes by eating too much sugar. Type 2 used to only occur in older people, but it is now seen in young children as well.

It is very easy to misunderstand the differences in the types of diabetes. While both are serious, Type 1 is a disease that can't be controlled through diet. I must admit that I never had any concept of the difference until I was introduced to this site. Thank you for helping me learn more about the different challenges of Type 1.
